Marrakech: The Beating Heart of Morocco

Located in the heart of Morocco, Marrakech is a fascinating city that embodies the true spirit of the country. With approximately 1.46 million inhabitants and a strategic position about 150 km from the Atlantic coast, this historic city is renowned for its vibrancy and authenticity. Founded between 1062 and 1070 during the Almoravid dynasty by the leader Yusuf ibn Tashfin, Marrakech has been a crossroads of cultures and influences, making it one of the world’s most iconic tourist destinations today.

The Medina and Jami el-Fna: The Soul of Marrakech

The heart of Marrakech is its medina, the old city, enclosed by ancient walls that separate it from the modern quarter. The life of the city centers around Jami el-Fna, a bustling square surrounded by the charm of souks and dominated by the imposing Koutubiya Mosque. By day, Jami el-Fna transforms into an open-air market selling fabrics, dates, fresh oranges, and other local products. Street performers, snake charmers, and artisans captivate visitors with ancient traditions. At sunset, the square transforms: street food stalls and rustic tables come to life, offering typical dishes and local entertainment late into the night.

Iconic Landmarks: Between History and beauty

Marrakech is a treasure of historical and artistic sites. The Koutubiya Mosque and its high minaret represent one of the city’s most recognizable symbols and the oldest of the Almohad minarets, along with Seville’s Giralda and Rabat’s Hassan Tower.

Among the must-see sites are the picturesque souks, the majestic Saadian Tombs, and the sumptuous El Badi Palace, which tell centuries of history and culture. In the new city, the famous Majorelle Garden is an oasis of color and tranquility, created by French artist Jacques Majorelle in 1919 and restored in 1980 by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé. The garden, with its iconic Majorelle blue and the small monument dedicated to Saint Laurent, offers a corner of timeless peace and beauty.
